Amazon.com Review
The EyeClops BioniCam Video Microscope from JAKKS Pacific opens up a world of microscopic fun for kids to explore. This bionic eye makes it easy to take digital pictures and capture video that documents new discoveries. Designed to keep inquisitive children aged eight and up entertained and interested in the world around them, the BioniCam is also engaging enough to captive adults.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Look at familiar objects in a whole new way; review images on a TV or computer

The Bad: Learning to focus the eye takes practice

In a Nutshell: Unique video microscope provides creepy close-ups and informal science lessons

Ages: 8 and older
Requires: 5 AA batteries; TV and/or computer for full effect

A belt clip battery pack makes it easy to take the BioniCam anywhere. View larger.

Magnify Your World,
To get started, simply insert five AA batteries (not included) into the belt clip battery pack, insert the included USB memory stick into the top of the BioniCam, and turn the unit on. With the camera's ergonomically shaped handle in one hand, you can focus on any number of everyday objects--such as coins, fabric, your pet's fur, or your own hair and skin. The magnified images appear in real time and full color on the LCD screen. Below the screen, you'll find easy to use buttons that allow you to navigate the menu, select video or photo options, review your gallery, and delete unwanted images.

A zoom dial offers either 100x, 200x or 400x magnification. To focus an image, twist the I.R.I.S. lens attachment until you achieve the results you're looking for. Getting a crisp image takes a little patience at first, especially at the highest magnification. But with practice and with the help of the easy-to-read focusing gauge, you'll be focusing the lens in no time.

Photos and Video Without Complicated Setup
With no software to upload and minimal set-up, the BioniCam makes sharing discoveries easy. Plug the USB memory stick directly into your computer for quick access to images, then save and edit them or post them to your blog. Alternately, you can use the included video cable to display images on your TV. When you are plugged into the TV, the LCD screen turns off, but you still retain all the functionality of the BioniCam. This makes reviewing huge enlargements in real time a fun group activity.

Contagious Fun for the Whole Family
The hand-held magnification "eye" is fun to hold and makes it easy for your child to explore the microscopic world without complicated scientific instruments. Viewing the magnified images on your computer or TV screen in full, vivid color encourages kids to take learning into their own hands and provides numerous opportunities for parents and children to play fun and educational games together.

The excitement of seeing objects in your child's everyday world magnified to up to 400 times is sure to be a hit with whole family. Fortunately, the lightweight, durable plastic unit fits comfortably into both small and large hands. And if you need some help getting started, the easy-to-read instruction booklet offers lots of tips for finding items that hide interesting textures, from pine needles to sponges and insects.

On the lowest setting, the LEDs occasionally prove too bright for viewing lighter-colored objects, and these images may remain unclear on large viewing screens. On the higher magnification settings, however, this did not seem to be a problem, as textures and colors came through flawlessly. And while the battery pack makes it easy to explore indoors and out, the LCD screen can be tough to read in direct sunlight.

Overall, these are minor concerns that should do nothing to prevent this fun, educational toy from being big hit with all kinds of kids.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding improvement over the original Eyeclops!   January 3, 2009
S. Lipson
I bought the original Eyeclops last year and bought this one mostly because of the discounted price and extra features. This is an amazingly good improvement from the first version. I especially like that you can switch between magnifications of 100x, 200x, and 400x. The original only had a 200x power. Honestly the 100x is the best and the easiest to get a good focused photo on. You have to have quite a steady hand and moderate patience to get a clear photo on the stronger magnifications. I love the portability of this model, the USB hook up option, and features (has modes for; video camera, pictures, slideshow, and galleries for photos and videos). It has a 2 1/4 inch diagonal full color viewing screen that rivals any current digital camera. The screen/buttons are very intuitive. My 9 yr old didn't even look at the manual and had no problem figuring out all the function options, including uploading the photos on the computer. You can see any shots/video you've made on the built in screen, or on your TV or computer through very easy hook-ups. Saving or deleting can be done on the BioniCam. I highly recommend this very cool and educational toy!

3 out of 5 stars have a feeling it will end up at the bottom of toy chest   January 2, 2009
M. GONZALEZ
My kids 8 & 10 played with this for about 1 hour. They got bored. That is not the toys fault. It does work and it is cordless. The focusing does take a bit of practice to get the hang of it. I had trouble with it until my husband showed me how to do it. They might have a better time with it in the summer when they are outside more, not sure. Glad I didn't pay more than 20.00 for it.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this when I was a kid!   January 2, 2009
Steven (NYC)
This is totally awesome! A must have gift for any child interested in the sciences, and a gift that can spark an interest in science!

The hand held microscope works very well, gave it as a Christmas present, and we tested it right away. You have to put the unit right against what you are trying to view. Subjects are lit up by white leds (more could be better) and displayed at decent resolution on the lcd screen.

Saving photos are easy and they reside on the usb stick which is included. The unit is lightweight and easy to carry around.

This is an amazing toy that really gets kids exploring and learning about the natural world all around them!

The only cons I thought It had was that its in a weird shape of a gross eye (less appealing to girls?) and the focusing ring (the white part) should have been independent as when turning it at high magnifications can cause you to lose the subject as it has to be right up against the material.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 10 minutes   January 1, 2009
Darcy Fournier (West Virginia)
The idea is great. We took it out of the box, put the batteries in and turned it on.

Easy learning curve and a bit of tweaking to get the angle just right and soon we were looking at our skin close up, hair follicles, sugar, salt etc.

Problem is 1o-minutes after using it, with fresh rechargeable batteries the units screen went crazy and then had lines all through it and stopped working completely.

Other batteries would not breath life back into it. It might be a hit or a miss thing...some reviewers like it, others had problems. Guess ya gotta be lucky to get a good working one.

Again, the concept is great. I might exchange it and try it again...but right now I would not recommend this product to anyone until I can determine if maybe mine was damaged in shipping, or if this this a product that is inconsistent in durability.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Portable Video Microscope, Fantastic Value - Recommended   January 1, 2009
CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3VFCROHTDWFBC The "EyeClops BioniCam Video Microscope" is a very fun and functional portable microscope. For the very low price this can be found for on Amazon, it is a true value. The best feature is that the unit is self contained, so it does not need to be directly connected to a computer or to a TV (it can be via the included cable).

Pictures are saved as ".jpg" to a 32mb USB drive (included) that can be connected directly into the computer's USB port.

The unit feels fairly flimsy, so care should be taken when focusing or changing the magnification.

When looking for subjects, flat objects work best at higher magnifications.

Remember that this is a low cost toy, not an expensive scientific device. When used correctly, children will have a lot of fun and perhaps this will even spark an interest in science.

Overall, we are very pleased with the performance, quality, and price of the EyeClops Video Microscope. Recommended!
